English Enhancement Programme (27–31 August)
At BNBU, most of your classes will be taught in English. To help you adjust to the English learning environment, you will attend an English Enhancement Programme (EEP) offered by the School of General Education (SGE) during the week before the new semester begins.
l. What is the EEP?
The EEP is designed to introduce you to the requirements of learning and producing work in an academic English environment. Your EEP classes will include activities in which you will look at sources of academic information, listen to and take part in academic discussions, etc. These activities, and many others, will begin to help you develop the confidence and skills that you will need to succeed in the two core English for Academic Purposes courses (EAP I, and II) that you will take in your first two years of study at BNBU.
2. Who is the EEP for?
The programme is for new students joining BNBU.
3. When does the EEP take place?
27 August – 31 August 2026 (Thursday to Monday)
The detailed timetable for EEP will be handed out, posted on the notice board on the 4th F/L of T3, and made available on the SGE website (https://sge.bnbu.edu.cn/en/students/student_support.htm) and SGE WeChat account closer to the time. Please note that students will have different class times based on their student ID numbers.
4. Why is the EEP needed?
Although you have all studied English at school, the requirements for using English in a college are different from those you may have learned in the past. Therefore, to make sure that you have the best chance of success in your first assessments and assignments, we will introduce you to some of these important differences before your classes begin in Week 1. It is also an opportunity to meet the Centre for Foreign Languages team of SGE and to learn about the different kinds of help and support you can access to improve your English while studying at BNBU.
5. How can students benefit most from the EEP?
To make the best out of this programme, you need to ensure that you attend all of the classes on your EEP timetable. We also recommend that you try to speak as much English as you can during the EEP.
6. What happens after the EEP?
After the semester begins, you will attend compulsory English classes every week to continue to improve your academic English skills. You will also have the chance to get extra help with English through the Student English Learning Hub (SELH), which includes a Writing Assistance Programme (WAP), Speaking Assistance Programme (SAP), English Speaking Corner (ESC), Student English Support Programme (SESP) and English Philosophy Club.
